De Amicis wrote it as he was pleased of his friend's success in Florence and expected as many applauses for him in Milan: 'desidera nuovamente di vederti anche il mio figliolo Ugo, che a vent'anni (nove anni fa) scrisse una commedia assai promettente, la quale, non so per­ché, non ebbe sorella. E tu conoscerai in lui un giovane forte e buono, che ti riuscirà simpatico. Sarebbe lo mia felicità se non fosse un alpinista temerario, irrefrenabile, incurabile, che mi fa tremare ogni anno dal primo di luglio al trenta settembre, quasi senza interruzione [...] Se lo buona e brava signora dello Guardia che fu la prima ammiratrice drammatica del mio povero Fu­rio e che anche per questo mi è carissima) mi volesse contentare (sciI. sending him a photographic portrait), io le manderei la mia vecchia testa bianca e ci scriverei a traverso l'espressione della mia gratitudine...'. The contents of this letter are interesting, both for what concerns De Amicis' son Ugo (who will also be a writer and dramatist) and the hint at his other son, Furio, who committed suicide in Turin's Valentino park on 15 November 1898, at the age of twenty-two, for unknown reasons.
