Though the concept of the All-Star Game in the National Hockey League did not become official until the 1947-48 campaign, the 1930s saw a trio of benefit games played featuring teams composed of All-Stars. The first two were the Ace Bailey benefit and the Howie Morenz Memorial, held in 1933 and 1937, respectively, while the third took place as a result of events that occurred in 1939.In the summer of 1939 Babe Siebert, who at the time had just retired from the Montreal Canadiens, fell victim to drowning while with his family. News of the tragedy came as an exceptional blow to the Montreal community as Siebert had just been named the head coach of the Canadiens. The entire hockey world was understandably in shock.Siebert was survived by his children and wife, who had become paralyzed after complications during the birth of their second child. When the NHL learned of the news of Siebert's death, a memorial game was organized with the proceeds going to the fallen player's spouse. Played at the Montreal Forum in October of that year, the game pitted the Canadiens against an outfit of NHL All-Stars and raised a total of $15,000.Selected as one of the All-Stars for the memorial, Detroit legend Ebbie Goodfellow wore the currently offered sweater during the game, which was won by the All-Stars 5-2. The off-white wool sweater was manufactured by McNiece's Sports in Montreal and has been trimmed with the orange and black colors of the NHL. Chest insignia consists of a 9" star that reads "N.H.L. ALL STARS 1939", while the verso sports a "14" in 8" tall black numerals. Several small holes pepper the jersey body front and verso, but the overall display potential has been diminished very little, if at all, by this.A long-time standout who spent his entire professional career with the Detroit organization, Ebbie Goodfellow was a perennial star, helping his Red Wings to Stanley Cup Championships in 1936, 1937 and 1940. Additionally, Goodfellow was also presented with the Hart Trophy in 1940 as league MVP.Shirt comes with remarkable provenance as it was purchased by our consignor directly from Ebbie Goodfellow's son in Detroit in the 1990s. This rare jersey is a style that is understandably scarce since it was used in only one game, so rare that the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto doesn't even own one. This sweater is one of only a handful that are known to exist in the hobby. A companion to the Eddie Shore jersey from the Babe Siebert Memorial that we also offer in this sale, this fine Goodfellow All-Star jersey with Hall of Fame pedigree will be sure to gather the attention of an elite group of advanced vintage wool collectors. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 22.50% Buyer's Premium with a $9 minimum Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Auctions.
