Tied to a Boston Bruin organization that caught wind of his prodigious skill at the tender age of 14, the exceptional talent that was Bobby Orr was ready for the big stage of the NHL by the time he was a 6' 200-pound 18-year-old. Orr had all the skills from a very early age -- superb speed, phenomenal stickhandling and out-of-this-world defensive prowess. Few who had seen him play would say that the Bruins were out of line when they made the teen the highest-paid player in NHL history for his rookie campaign. To say that he was good in his debut professional campaign would be severe understatement -- he collected a number of accolades including the Calder Trophy as the league's best rookie, a spot on the Second All-Star Team, and finished second in the league in scoring by defenseman. It was a sign of spectacular things to come. Orr revitalized Beantown's zest for hockey much in the same way that Eddie Shore had sparked it generations before.Once Orr entered the league, other outfits were forced to alter the way that they approached the sport. Never before had a defensive stalwart such as Orr possessed the skill and finesse to post the offensive tallies that he did -- opponents were defending the defender. But the heady future Hall of Famer always dominated when he was on the ice and there was very little anyone could do about it. Few familiar with sport are foggy on the details of Orr's famous goal in the 1970 Stanley Cup Finals, a dramatic flying affair that brought Boston its first championship in 29 years.NHL defensive players who longed for a Norris Trophy, the honor bestowed upon the league's best defender each year, were unlucky if they played during the same era as Orr. The Boston great wrapped up that award each of his first eight seasons of NHL play. It was only injuries that could slow this phenomenal talent, a fact that was foreshadowed when the teenaged Orr suffered a damaged knee in his rookie year. His daring approach to the game eventually conspired to take away the mobility that was one of his supreme advantages. From the last of his Norris Trophy runs and his last full season as a member of the Bruins we present this historically-compelling white Boston sweater. This is perhaps the last home shirt that Orr wore while still at the top of his game, before the injuries added up and robbed him of his game-changing speed and mobility. While we cannot conclude this definitively, it is believed that this is the only home jersey that Orr wore for all 35 regular season games at Boston Garden, with another set having been created for the Bruins' playoff run. Adding to the allure, Orr also won his second Art Ross Trophy awarded to the league's top scorer that season. To this day, no other defenseman has paced the NHL in scoring. The white Wilson size 50 shirt comes with outstanding evidence of game use. Heavy puckering can be seen on the well-preserved spoked-wheel B crest on the chest, as well as the "4" attached at each arm and jersey verso. Lower front has some great stick marks and four great team repairs as well as nice material pilling in the area of the waist striping. Sleeves also show great wear with two team repairs to the lower left sleeve and five to the right sleeve, including a prominent one near the shoulder numeral. Verso shows some staining in the right shoulder area. The alternate captain's "A" has been carefully removed from the upper left chest area, a practice that is customary for Orr shirts. Inside has some nice material pilling and the two-piece garter style fight strap shows great rust. Orr has also signed this historic shirt twice -- once on the rear numeral and once on the upper right chest area.A surefire pinnacle piece for any top-level memorabilia collection, this outstanding offering serves as one of Orr's finest. Worn during what would serve to be his last hurrah of sorts, this gamer signifies the close of a Boston legacy that may never be equaled. The NHL owes a lot to Bobby Orr and Heritage is excessively honored to be able to offer a piece so significant to his career. LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph).
