Description
Current Lot Musicians and Librettists of the Nineteenth Century Remarkable collection of letters, photographs and dedications by the foremost musicians and librettists of the nineteenth century. A) Giuseppe Giacosa (1847-1906), Signed autograph letter in which the author wrote that , due to his persistent cough ('tosse indemoniata'), he wouldn't have been able to go out and join his friend for a walk ('fare lo scampagnata'): 'Sono furente contro di me e contro Roma. Questo città d'oggi mi avrebbe doto un piacere grande ma nello stato in cui mi trovo lo gaiezza degli altri non farebbe che stimolare la mia bile'. Dated 'Roma, 7 febbraio 1896'. Three pages, 8vo. Tear and wear in correspondence with the horizontal plies. B) Alberto Franchetti (1860-1942). Interesting signed autograph letter revealing that the composer was in Genoa to assist to the première of his opera, Cristoforo Colombo at the Teatro Carlo Felice, on 6 October 1892. As he was pleased to have met the orchestra director, Luigi Mancinelli wrote: 'Dovendo, o quanto pare, riprodursi il mio Colombo allo Scala io mi sono permesso di domandare al Mancinelli se non sarebbe per awentura possibile che egli assumesse lo Direzione degli spettacoli del massimo Teatro di Milano e mi rispose che, non solo sarebbe pronto, ma non avanzerebbe pretese superiori o quelle che il Municipio adesso può accordare'. Dated 'Genova 9 settembre 1892'. Three pages, 8vo. C) Luigi Illica (1857-1919). Three signed autograph letters written on franked postcards, two of which are addressed Giuseppe Hirsch whilst the third one was destined to Eraclio Gerbella. D) Leopoldo Mugnone (1858-1941). Signed autograph musical quotation on the verso of a photographic postcard (Photo-Hall Company, Palermo) dated 'Montepiano, 1 settembre 1915'. E) Umberto Giordano (1867-1948). Signed autograph dedication on the verso of a photographic postcard (M. Crimella, Milano) dated 'Bologna, 1 giugno 1934'. F) Enrico Petrella (1813-1877). Signed autograph one-page letter, 8vo, dated 'Milano, 6 novembre 1866': 'lo spero che si potesse combinare di dare uno delle mie ultime opere questo cornovale allo Pergola'. G) Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982). Signed autograph dedication in memory of the concerts held in Lisbon, written on album page and dated 16 May 1954. H) Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968). Autograph one-bar musical quotation from the Sinfonia in la (1942).
