The letter states that he received the watch as a gift from the Apawamis club in Rye NY after he won the U.S. Open Championship in 1922. Sarazen had been a caddy at the club in his youth. The letter further states that he presented the watch as a gift some years ago and he was now advising his friend to sell it to the gentleman addressed in the letter.Gene Sarazen (1902-1999) is one of only five golfers (along with Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tiger Woods) to win all the major championships in his career. Born Eugenio Saraceni, Gene Sarazen was the inventor of the sand wedge and a player on six U.S. Ryder Cup teams. He was a contemporary and great rival of Bobby Jones.
