The war predictably had a significant impact on such a young man, who returned home and suddenly took up painting. Within six years, Galien-Laloue was exhibiting his first works at the Paris Salon--scenes of Belle Époque Paris into which he infused his intense love for the city of his birth. Known as quiet and reclusive, Galien-Laloue was a painter of the city itself--a city he was doubtless grateful to have returned to after the war--rather than its people, who figured far less prominently in his work.
