By the 1950s, he abandoned figurative painting and studied with abstract artists Francisco Bores, Roger Bissière, and Pierre Soulages. Marfaing worked in oil, acrylic, and printmaking, and primarily in black. His paintings are not about representing reality, but rather ridding the painting of any representational weight. Marfaing believed in passing the tangible in order to express the inherent nature of the painting. In early works, such as the present example, his gestures are violent in nature and impastoed. Marfaing never titled his works, so as to prevent influencing the viewer's interpretation; only the dates and dimensions are given as a reference. Condition Report: Unframed, original canvas, craquelure throughout, some alligatoring, some losses along edges, approximately 1/4 x 1/2 inch loss in right center region, 1/4" vertical loss in upper right region, otherwise good condition.
