He quickly began accepting commissions, illustrating both novels and stories. Much of his work was done for The Saturday Evening Post, with which he had a fruitful relationship lasting almost thirty years. Although Dunn's bold strokes and thick impasto made him a natural choice for Westerns and adventure stories, he was equally capable of conveying softer emotions. His sense of drama was such that he was one of eight illustrators chosen to join the American Expeditionary Force during World War I.
