This important letter relates to the troubling Cantata that the Società de' Nobili di Milano commissioned to Verdi in early February 1844 for the VI Congress of Scientists: 'La Nobile Società [...] so che a Lei ricorrerà per scriverne la poesia. lo non posso che chiamarmi sommamente fortunato di poter aggiungere le mie note, e di aver nel tempo stesso l'occasione di dimostrare la mia venerazione ad un uomo che sommamente stimo [...] A me non resta che pregarla di volermi mandare al più presto che potrà il piano di quella Cantata, onde io possa studiarlo, poscia i primi versi per mettermi tosto al lavoro'. The Cantata is a dark page in Verdi's bright career as this composition never came to light. Verdy had alredy renounced to write when this letter was written, because he believed that the text written by Cav. Maffei was not suitable for a musical comosition and for this reason he asked to involve Romani in this project.However, on 14 July 1844, Verdi will definitely renounce to compsing the Cantata even if Romani had accepted to write a new text (entitled'Flavio Gioia') due to the excessive length of this second attempt (as declared to romabi in a later document (see catalogue entry no. 116).
