Description
Current Lot Riccardo Zandonai (1833-1944) Autograph manuscript of Francesca da Rimini. It is the first complete writing of the opera's score, which is dated and signed at the end of each act. Act I: 'Sacco - 26 settembre 1912'. Act II: 'Sacco, 19 febbraio 1913 - ore 20'. Act III: 'Figino (Lugano Lake) Villa Conchita -12 giugno 1913'. Act IV; section One, 'Figino - 8 luglio 1913'; Section Two, 'Finito partitura - Pesaro 9 dicembre 1913'. 414 pages, large 4to, 12 pentagrams. Adjustments, cancellations and integrations have been made using pen and black ink. On page 49 (Act I) a significant change has been made gluing a strip of paper onto the original sheet. Zandonai started writing at this manuscript about one year before the score was completed. In the period between June 1913 and the date of the opera's completion, the score for voice and piano was be written a little earlier than the last parts, and thus just before the author ended his work on 9 December 1913. Francesco do Rimini -opera in four acts, libretto by Tito Ricordi inspired to Gabriele D'Annunzio's homonym piece- was first staged at the Teatro Regio, Turin, on 19 February 1914: it is universally known as Zandonai's masterpiece and one of the more out standing works of the so-called 'Generazione dell'Ottanta'. Bruno Bagnoli (Riccardo Bandoni: Società di studi trentini di scienze storiche, Trento 1978) recounts the history of the manuscript's preservation from WW2's bombings. Fine half-binding, phitomorphic and geometric decorations with gilt details. The front cover is decorated with a romantic image of Paolo and Francesca (in the upper part) and two Putti holding a garland (lower part) whilst, at the centre, there is a coat of arms and the wording 'Francesco do Rimini - D'Annunzio-Zandonai'. The back cover is decorated with gilt vegetal motifs scattered around the whole surface. Extremely rare, important document.
